Hazardous Road Conditions and Motorcycle Accidents

Road conditions can play a huge part when it comes to Motorcycle Accidents. The design of the road, the condition, or the weather can make motorcycles more susceptible to an accident.

Motorcycles are more dependent than a regular vehicle on needing a solid, high-friction road surface to maintain control while driving. When the road conditions are hazardous, it is all too common for a motorcycle accident to occur.

Motorcyclists should understand what constitutes a road hazard, be alert for such dangers, and take the necessary precautions to try and avoid them.

Some of the most common road hazards that cause motorcycle accidents include:

Gravel and Debris

Gravel and debris are one of the most dangerous road hazards for motorcyclists to drive on, and Injured in a Motorcycle Accident in Georgiaunfortunately, gravel on the pavement tends to be very common. Motorcyclists who are driving at high speeds will often become involved in an accident if the roadway is covered in gravel and the driver does not have experience controlling their vehicle in such conditions.

Gravel and debris on the road can seriously compromise the bike's stability and increase the chances of getting into a motorcycle wreck.

If the gravel or debris threatens to throw you off traction, you need to slow down and ride through the patch carefully, trying to maintain a straight course and using only the back brake if possible to avoid an accident.

Slick Surfaces

Slippery, wet surfaces are much more dangerous for motorcycle drivers than for cars. The unstable nature of a two-wheeled bike and the smaller, lighter size mean that sliding on the road can easily result in an accident.

Wet surfaces can be even more dangerous if the motorcyclist is trying to make a turn. Hitting a slick surface when making a turn will more than likely result in a crash.

Motorcyclists need to take extra caution if the roadways are wet. When it first rains the road conditions can be difficult to drive on even for a car, and normal speeds should be reduced in order to avoid hydroplaning on the wet surface.

Uneven Surfaces

An average motor vehicle can drive over an uneven surface and be completely fine.

However, motorcyclists will need to be much more careful. If a motorcycle driver runs over a pothole at a high rate of speed, they could be thrown completely from their bike and suffer from very serious injuries.

If a pothole cannot be avoided, it's very important to slow down as much as possible and keep the bike straight when riding through it. It's very easy to lose total control of the bike when driving across uneven surfaces, so a motorcycle driver will need to be more vigilant than a regular vehicle driver when it comes to riding over uneven surfaces.

Animals on the Road Way

Hitting an animal such as a rabbit or squirrel when you are in a car is not always a big deal, but when you hit one of these animals driving a motorcycle, it can throw you off balance and cause an accident to occur.

Hitting a larger animal such as a deer will almost always result in severe injuries and even death.

Unfortunately, when an animal runs into the road, it can be difficult to avoid running them over, and swerving out of the way can cause an even bigger accident if the motorcyclist runs into another vehicle or hits an object off the road.

There is not too much you can do if an animal runs out into the middle of the road while you're driving. However, you will have a better chance of avoiding a terrible accident if you are paying attention to the road and following the speed limit signs.
